It was intimidating because everyone was older. No one had ever looked at me like that before. So many guys were giving me the once over and were all smiley. Didn't know it, but I was becoming a Castro Clone. I went back to the Elephant Walk and had another gin and tonic, feeling like I "belonged". He noticed that I could not stop staring at his chest hair in the mirror. The barber also trimmed my fu-manchu moustache and my bushy Greek unibrows. After one gin and tonic (it sounded like an "adult" drink to order at the bar - I was so nervous), I was kind of drunk and decided to go down the block for a haircut since I had long, wavy 70's hair and everyone else had short hair, as some funny/flirty guy pointed out. I'd recently gotten braces off my teeth and got contact lenses. OMFG, I wasn't sure I was gay when I walked in, but knew that "these people" were my tribe. I was an18 year-old virgin in 1980 and had a UC Santa Cruz student ID that said I was 22, but no one carded me.
